The sun is a symbol of self-empowerment, radiance, brilliance and enlightenment. Sun Salutation, otherwise known as Surya Namaskar, is a series of 12 yoga asanas or postures which are performed successively, flowing gently from one to the next.
All yoga sequences are aligned with the breath. We take in breath as we extend or stretch, and exhale as we bend or contract. When practiced regularly the Sun Salutation builds strength, flexibility and balance. All three are important attributes to be developed physically, mentally and emotionally.
Breathing with the rhythm of our bodily movements naturally has the effect of bringing us into the present moment and helps us to tap into a soft, gentle mindfulness, or an uncluttered mind so to speak. This inevitably leads to a feeling of calmness and the release of stress and tension.
If things feel a little crazy in your day, why not stop for a few moments, breathe in as you raise your hands up in salutation, visualize the suns rays bursting forth from your heart center and flow with graceful ease through Surya Namaskar? Let your unstressed light shine out!
