Several weeks ago, after working for MegaFood for 3 years, I had the opportunity of visiting the premises of one of our local produce suppliers: Decas Cranberry. I didn’t know quite know what I should expect, having never toured a cranberry bog, but I envisioned the images offered in popular commercials and media and was eager to see them first hand.
Upon arrival at Decas Cranberry, we were greeted by Dan Souza, Sr. Director of Sales and Marketing. I immediately noted his honest nature and shared enthusiasm for the products. We set out to explore the bogs. It was just as I pictured it, only better. We drove to a small entry road in a beautiful family neighborhood that, to my surprise, revealed a vast network of cranberry bogs. It was breathtaking.
We then had the unique experience of watching a wet harvest. This I learned, is a process where the grower floods a dry cranberry bog allowing the cranberry vines to loosen and float to the surface of the water. These berries are then corralled and returned to the receiving station where they undergo a thorough selection and sorting process.
During my visit I was also afforded the privilege to actually enter into the cranberry bog. I plucked the freshest cranberry I had ever tasted directly from the water and I had a new appreciation for cranberries and for all the amazing people who we partner with. Such great care and focus goes into the process, and the end result is no surprise: a premium whole food supplement from a premium whole food source that we know and trust!
