Durham Research

Durham Research is Created

MegaFood looked at the possibility of creating our own raw material. The first step in this process was the development of a research facility, Durham Research, and a mission statement.

Durham Research's Mission

Durham Research's mission is to develop protocols and processes to produce superior new raw materials. MegaFood charged Durham Research with ensuring the incorporation of applicable known scientific discoveries in the production of MegaFood's Cold Fusion™ FoodState® Nutrients. Durham Research is committed to use due diligence and Validation in the selection of all raw materials.

Testing the Waters
  • Important in the research process was our introduction to Dr. William Chesbro, a professor emeritus at the University of New Hampshire, who has an unparalleled history in yeast research and Bioreacting.
  • We were introduced to Karen Brauer, a researcher and plant manager for a major yeast producer. Karen's expertise was invaluable as full scale production processes were developed.
  • We began an extensive review and accumulation of all the published research pertaining to the project.
  • A partnership with the New Hampshire Industrial Research Center and Durham Research was established to conduct a research project at the University of New Hampshire.
  • We established a rationale for how our raw materials might be manufactured using the latest science and the best of Mother Nature.
  • Initial formulations were created and the resulting materials were freeze dried and tested.
  • Based on the positive results from our initial testing that validated our concepts, we made the decision to go forward.
Research Implementation
  • A "State of the Art" Applikon Bioreactor was purchased to develop and test the manufacturing processes required to implement the latest science.
  • The crucial yeast selection process was started. A search was launched to find the perfect strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae required for the project to be successful.
  • The search began for the appropriate food medium for each individual Cold Fusion™ FoodState® nutrient.
  • Bioreactor criteria are developed for appropriate air flows, PH, and temperature regimens to maximize the quality of the finished Cold Fusion™ FoodState® raw materials.
  • The discovery of the inherent value of Fresh Frozen Raw Food in the Cold Fusion™ FoodState® Nutrient transformation process comes to the forefront.
  • The successful production of trial batches of each raw material to be produced.
  • The testing of each batch for substantiation of results.
Drying
  • An investigation of various drying methods was initiated to find an optimal method using lower temperatures.
  • The discovery of an exciting innovation, the Refractance Window® Drying Method is the answer to the low temperature drying method we were seeking.
  • The Refractance Window® Drying process, although expensive and slow compared to other drying methods, is very protective of the raw material. The Refractance Window® Dryer was designed to preserve the color, aromatic and phytonutrient compounds. The Refractance Window® Dryer becomes an integral part of our decision to build the Durham Research manufacturing facility. Refractance Window® is a registered trademark of MCD Technologies, Inc.
