Formulations for Focus: MegaFood B-Centered

Whether you have children or not, you’ve probably noticed this shift in energy each year when the days get shorter and just a bit cooler. Perhaps you’ve noticed you feel a little less energetic, and maybe just a touch less focused? And what if you do have children? Back-to-school time can be challenging, as kids transition from long days spent outdoors to the structured learning environment of school. Is there anything we can do, then, to help ease distracted thoughts and a lack of focus?

Well, I’m glad you asked :) I often find myself thinking - before all the amenities that come with modern life, how did our ancestors address this concern? While our fast-paced culture hasn’t helped our occasional lack of focus (I’m looking at you, “multi-tasking,” as a boast-able attribute), certainly this isn’t just a modern concern.

Herbal Considerations

While it’s often best to use as many of the tools from your natural-health toolbox as you can to support your wellness (meditation, exercise, getting enough sleep), let’s learn from our ancestors and focus today (pun intended) on some of the ways plants can help us stay on task and hit that 4pm deadline, or help our children focus during those long biology lectures. You’ll note coffee is nowhere to be found on this list!

Bacopa has been used in India, where it originates, for thousands of years. In fact, texts datingback from 6th century B.C. note it’s use as an aid to mental function and cognition*! Bacopa is a marsh-loving botanical often found along the shores in India and other parts of Asia, and is still used today to support mental function and clarity.*

Lemon Balm

Lemon Balm is my personal favorite. Most herbalists have certain botanicals that they just adore, and Lemon Balm is mine! It is also referred to as ‘the gladdening herb’, and with good reason - one whiff of the fresh plant makes me smile from ear to ear, and don’t get me started on a fresh Lemon Balm sun-tea! Aside from being incredibly aromatic, lemon balm is considered a calming botanical, traditionally used to ease tension and enhance cognitive ability*. Lemon Balm is also a very gentle herb, and can be used with children and adults alike to promote calm and focus.*

Ok, so not an herb, but still important! L-Theanine is an amino acid  naturally found in green tea. It has been shown in studies to helps to promote a sense of relaxation while maintaining alertness.* This is key - f lack of focus is something you’re looking to support, you definitely don’t want to get sleepy! L-Theanine works beautifully to help encourage relaxation, focus and cognitive function without promoting drowsiness!* Win-Win!
