Your Adrenals: Are They Confused and Overused?

Your Adrenals: Are They Confused and Overused?

Fight or Flight

It’s the middle of the night. You’re fast asleep. And before you know it, you’re running down a dark hallway, being pursued by something just out of view. You’re turning corners, stumbling, keeping one step ahead of whatever is behind you. Your heart is racing; sweat prickles the back of your neck. Just as you feel the pursuer reach out for you, you bolt upright in bed, panting and wide-eyed. Nightmares are common, and even though they aren’t real, the surge of energy and adrenaline that we feel upon waking often is. It is the oft talked about fight or flight response, and is an adaptive evolutionary advantage designed to help us stay alive in the face of danger.

What happens, however, when that response gets overused?

A True Threat, or Just a Little Drama?

It’s no secret that modern life is hectic and stressful. Deadlines, school drop-offs, family obligations, the holiday season, and even exercise can cause stress on the body. Our body’s response to these stressors is to help propel us out of these situations and into safety, but…  Our adrenals, the glands responsible for this response, can’t differentiate between the threat of pursuit or the threat of chronic work-stress, and thus it is easy for us to exhaust our resources, which can lead to a breakdown of vital functions and a decline in health and well-being.

In addition to reducing the impact of daily stress with practices such as meditation, it is important to consider the health of the adrenal glands to ensure they are replenished and have the building blocks they need to perform their best.

Show Those Glands Some Love.
