What is Turmeric?
Turmeric has been respected and ingested by people from all over the world for thousands of years, and is believed to have originated in India. A bright yellow-orange root with a long and colorful history, this auspicious plant grows best in tropical areas.
Yogis and yoginis strive to remain flexible, both in body and mind.
Tapping into the ancient wisdom of plants is one avenue to achieve this. Turmeric has been respected and ingested by people from all over the world for thousands of years, and is believed to have originated in India. A bright yellow-orange root with a long and colorful history, this auspicious plant grows best in tropical areas. A relative to ginger, turmeric thrives with ample rainfall, and very warm temperatures.
Turmeric is widely used in Indian cooking, and brings both the flavor and brilliant yellow color to curry. It is interesting to note that traditionally black pepper is often found alongside turmeric in curry recipes, as black pepper has been shown in modern times to synergistically facilitate absorption of turmeric.* The widespread use of this plant is reflected in its various names found in Hindi, Mandarin, Japanese, Tahitian and the Hawaiian languages, to name a few. Today, in addition to being used for culinary purposes, it is also found in many dietary supplements. Just like with all foods, herbs and supplements, knowing the source of where your turmeric is grown and harvested is important.
As a Naturopathic Doctor who also loves to practice Yoga, you could say that I’m a twice-over fan of this mighty root. Beyond a personal love of turmeric, I also enjoy recommending it. Turmeric use has skyrocketed in the last decade, primarily as a result of the current understanding of its key role in maintaining a healthy whole body inflammation response.*
A primary compound in the turmeric plant is curcumin, and many supplements are standardized to 95% curcumin, including the entirety of MegaFood’s Turmeric Strength Collection. This collection includes products formulated specifically for Liver, Joint, and Whole Body, respectively. Each one highlights a unique blend, and they all contain turmeric sourced directly from family owned Kauai Organic Farms, on the North Shore of the island of Kauai. This beautiful ginger and turmeric farm is owned by Phil and Linda Green, who moved to Kauai in 2004 to pursue their dream of owning a farm in Hawaii. Talk about pursuing your passion!
In addition to the Turmeric Strength Collection, MegaFood also offers one of my all time favorites, Daily Turmeric Nutrient Booster Powder, which can be conveniently added to any smoothie or shaken beverage. As turmeric has such a scrumptious, rich, earthy flavor, I think Daily Turmeric is a great option for those who want to experience the support of turmeric without missing out on the taste!* This is one of my very favorite pre or post-yoga smoothies that includes MegaFood’s powdered turmeric booster:
